Smart aleck or simple English mistake?

Hard to tell. This is how it went down.

Miss Lacey: Who can tell me the answer to...
Student: *Raising his hand, yelling 'Me! Me! Me! Me!'
Miss Lacey: I don't respond to 'Me! Me! Me! Me!'
Student: *After about half a minute of thinking, he raised his hand again and started yelling, 'I! I! I! I!'

If you knew the kid I think you'd say smart aleck. Made me laugh.
